David Paul Jones (DPJ) is an award-winning composer, pianist and singer based in Edinburgh, Scotland. He writes solo piano works, song cycles and soundtracks for the stage, commissioned and performed throughout Scotland, the UK and internationally. His work is known for its quiet intimacy and evocative musical landscapes.
As a live artist, DPJ performs his own work as both pianist and singer in solo and ensemble settings. His concert works include the song cycle Lone Tree, based on the poetry of Kathleen Jamie, which premiered at the Edinburgh International Book Festival in 2024. His debut album, Something There, appears on Linn Records.
Alongside his concert work, DPJ has written extensively for theatre, with a particular focus on visual and non-verbal storytelling. He has collaborated on many productions with National Theatre of Scotland, Traverse Theatre, Curious Seed, Dundee Rep and Vanishing Point, and is a long-standing member of the Grid Iron creative team, composing music for many of their acclaimed site-specific productions. He has also written extensively for children’s theatre.
His collaborations with writer and performer Ramesh Meyyappan have produced several acclaimed works. Their recent collaboration, Lear, premiered at the Singapore International Festival of Arts in 2025, with DPJ’s soundtrack receiving a Best Sound nomination at the Singapore Straits Times Theatre Awards. His soundtrack to Love Beyond, a Raw Material/ Vanishing Point co-production, won Best Music & Sound at the CATS Awards and is currently touring Japan. He also appeared at the Daejeon International Small Plays Festival in South Korea with Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me. Throughout 2026–27, his soundtrack for the National Theatre of China’s epic production The Green Snake returns in a major revival touring across China.
Forthcoming work includes the soundtrack for Grid Iron’s stage adaptation of Andrew O’Hagan’s novel Mayflies for the 2026 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, a new song cycle, Night Songs, an exploration of the night sky and the cosmos based on poems by Kathleen Jamie, and Hallway, a new soundtrack-led visual theatre work exploring assisted death and an imagined afterlife.
The Scotsman described DPJ as “a pianist, singer and composer of immense lyrical talent and depth”, and he is the recipient of the Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Award.
DPJ is the composer and one of the musicians performing on The Table (2026). His previous work with Curious Seed, Lung Ha and Lyra includes We Are All Just Little Creatures (2019) and the Lung Ha/Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh co-production Castle Lennox (2023).
