Speaking about joining Lung Ha, Arron said:

Arron joins Lung Ha in this new role, having worked with companies such as HighTide, Hopscotch Theatre, and Babel Theatre, where he continues in post as Creative Producer.

Location:                            Hybrid working – Home and Office (30b Grindlay Street); a minimum of 8 hours per week must be office based – LHTC has an office that is used on a ‘hot-desk’ basis.

The Development Officer reports, and is accountable, to the Executive Director.

Role Summary (key purpose)

To raise investment, from sources both public and private, in Lung Ha Theatre Company to enable the company to deliver on its creative and financial targets.  To take responsibility for financial targets. 

The generation of income / investment, and developing pathways to new sources of income / investment, are critical components of the role.


  • to work with the Executive Director, with the support of the Business Development Strategist, to devise, set, agree and achieve targets for investment from public and private bodies.
  • to undertake thorough and ongoing research into possible sources of investment – to devise an investment plan / schedule.
  • to generate investment from, and manage ongoing relationships with, grant givers and Trusts and Foundations to achieve (and when possible exceed) agreed targets.
  • to devise effective pathways to raise investment from individual giving and donations through the LHTC website, social channels and through working directly with the LHTC PR agency.
  • to work closely with the Artistic and Executive Directors on project plans to ensure funding deadlines are made.
  • to complete all documentation required for successful investment applications including enquiries, applications and reporting.
  • to maintain excellent communications with investors at all times.
  • to work closely with the Business Development Strategist, as required, on wider conversations around LHTC’s investment strategy
  • to be accountable for the success, or otherwise, of agreed targets.
  • to provide regular updates on progress to the Executive and Artistic Directors.
  • to generate reports as required to monitor funding status.
  • to be familiar with the LHTC 5-year Business Plan and understand the requirement for investment
  • to undertake any other work as would be considered appropriate and reasonable for the Development Officer.

Required skills:

  • Experience of drafting and submitting funding applications and of generating income – for both core and project based activities.
  • Experience of undertaking research required to reach out to new sources of investment.
  • Experience of generating income though individual giving and donations.
  • Experience of setting and agreeing financial targets.
  • Experience of devising fundraising campaigns.
  • Experience of working to achieve the outputs of an organisational plan.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team.
  • The ability to see investment applications to their completion – to include End of Project reporting.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A genuine interest in accessibility, inclusivity and equality of opportunity in the arts
  • Experience of creating, and nurturing, new and existing, investment partners and collaborators

Desirable qualities:

  • Experience of the creative and cultural sectors.

Terms and Conditions of employment:

Salary – £30,000: pro rata – £12,000

16 hour working week (schedule of work tbc) – there will be flexibility required at various times across the year.

20 days (pro rata) annual leave plus 8 public holidays (on a pro rata basis).

Flexible working will be supported by LHTC with the requirement of some office-based work and face-to-face meetings on a weekly basis.

The position is a one-year fixed term contract.

Lung Ha Theatre Company are delighted to announce that Ruth McEwan is set to join the team as a Producer on our new production Castle Lennox, due to premiere at The Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh in March 2023.

Ruth McEwan is an experienced theatre and festival producer based in Edinburgh. She has worked for the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society and Edinburgh International Children’s Festival. She has also worked in partnership with a wide variety of companies and artists from Scotland, UK and around the world. She is passionate about vital stories for all kinds of stages. 

We were deeply saddened to learn of the death of playwright Alan Wilkins last month and have been remembering his time working with Lung Ha Theatre Company. Alan worked with Lung Ha on CAN WE LIVE WITH YOU in 2008. Alan was always creative, open, warm and friendly, and a joy to work with.

At Home: The Soldier’s Tale

One violin, an enchanted book and an amazing music score come together to bring us Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale. It tells the story of Joseph, a soldier who sells his violin to a strange beggar who is not who they seem. What follows is a tale of greed, revenge and reflection in this Nicola Benedetti’s final performance as Artist in Residence at the Edinburgh International Festival. Benedetti is joined on stage by an orchestra of specially selected musicians.

Each musician, including Benedetti, brings their own music talents to the forefront of the piece, each musician working together to drive the story with ease. Stravinsky’s beautiful music is performed brilliantly by the orchestra with emotive narration throughout by Sir Thomas Allen as well as equally strong performances by Anthony Flaum and Siobhan Redmond. The Soldier’s Tale is a must see for audiences of all ages.

Lung Ha Reviews is back this August with two music reviews from Amy McCombes: The Staves and The Dolly Parton Story!

The Staves, Edinburgh International Festival

At this gig, The Staves introduced the audience to songs from their new album, Good Woman, including tunes which made me want to dance and sing and had meaningful lyrics which they wrote themselves. They responded well to the cheers by playing another song at the end and telling us about a future concert. An outdoor venue was used to accommodate the audience due to current Covid-19 guidelines.This venue, Edinburgh Park, also had chairs spaced out so social distancing could be possible for people in separate groups. They also have the option of ordering drinks from the app to help keep the audience safe.
I would definitely recommend you go to their concerts, listen to their new album, and even buy it.

The Dolly Parton Story, Edinburgh Festival Fringe

This show included many fascinating facts about Dolly Parton's life, career and songs. The venue, The Space on Hill Square, could have been more careful when sticking to Covid 19 guidelines. It was performed by an actress who played the role of Dolly really well and an excellent guitarist, both of them great storytellers.

Dolly’s hits and other songs she is known for, were used to tell her story. The lyrics in these songs and the storytellers were to tell the audience more about her life. I enjoyed singing along to some of my favorite hits which was a brillant way of getting the audience involved.

Join Lung Ha Theatre Company's Volunteer Support Team! Deadline: Thursday 26th August

We have space for new volunteers to join our Support Team.  

Our volunteers are at the heart of our work. They support and encourage our actors to work to the best of their abilities, while participating fully in workshops and rehearsals. There are sometimes opportunities during performances for volunteers to provide extra support onstage or backstage. Personal care is not part of the role.

New Volunteer Support Team Members need to have:

– An interest in theatre or performance 

– Experience of working as part of a team (this does not have to be from an employment or volunteering position) 

– Good verbal communication skills

– Enthusiasm, patience and flexibility

– An open mind and willingness to learn and try out new things  

– The ability and commitment to keep in touch by email  

Experience of working with people who have a learning disability would be an advantage but is not essential. 

We need new volunteers who are able to commit to three Tuesdays a month at the following times: 

Rehearsals on Zoom:  4 – 5pm or 5.30 – 6.30pm (or a mixture)

When we're able to work face to face, rehearsals at a venue in Edinburgh:  6 – 9pm

Lung Ha Across Scotland

Are you interested in being part of Scotland’s award-winning theatre company for actors with a learning disability, but live too far away from Edinburgh? You now have a chance to join the Lung Ha Theatre Company ensemble online: Lung Ha Across Scotland.

Lung Ha Theatre Company (LHTC) is launching a new pilot programme of FREE weekly online drama workshops for people with learning disabilities who live in Scotland and outside the Edinburgh area. The programme will run throughout autumn 2021 and we have places for eight participants. If you answer YES to the questions below, then we would love to hear from you!

  • Are you aged 18 or over and identify as having a learning disability, or as learning disabled?
  • Do have an interest in drama and would like to learn acting skills?
  • Do you live in Scotland, but live too far away from Edinburgh to attend weekly sessions?
  • Do you have access to the internet and are able to use an online video platform, such as Zoom?

You do not need to have any previous drama experience to join Lung Ha Theatre Company. All we ask is that you have a real interest and commitment to joining, an interest in learning about theatre and acting skills and enjoy working with other people.

Lung Ha Theatre Company, UK’s leading theatre company working with neurodiverse artists, is seeking to appoint two new Trustees to join its Board.

We are looking for committed individuals to expand the range of Trustee skills and to further consolidate existing skills. We require dynamic and motivated people who are supportive and sympathetic to the values, aims and objectives of Lung Ha Theatre Company. The Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh presents an advent calendar like no other! 

This piece of work is a series of 12 Tales of Christmas by Scottish writers. 8 of the Tales are pre-recorded available to watch on the Lyceum’s Vimeo channel for free while the 4 last were being streamed live until the 20th of December and can now be accessed after a £10 -20 ticket is purchased from their website. The tales are varied, telling stories about what Christmas means to many people, depending on their culture, experiences, class, religion, attitude, or abilities. Some of the tales bring parts of old stories and legends into them while trying to bring history up to date.

The stories are also told with music which relates to the tales told. Through use of similar and diverse themes these stories show inspiring messages of what it means to be giving, thoughtful, caring, generous, loving and cheerful at Christmas. The stories are well-written with well-developed plots describing dramatic, uplifting, memorable and mysterious events. Each story appears to be mainly told by one person and scenery, sound effects and props are used well to help the audience imagine the events described. The storytellers clearly target particular audiences by featuring themes of family, friendship and challenges, mentioning Scottish places, current and historical events, using comedy and telling tales suitable for all ages.

Characters are also well-described to help convey the messages of the stories through their actions as well as helping to meet expectations of the target audience. The audience's knowledge of familiar legends and characters is challenged as the tales attempt to educate them about history, religions, politics and the spirit of Christmas. This helps to make them believe in how the magic and wonders of Christmas brings joy, love and happiness. I would recommend watching these tales and give the series five stars.

Storytelling and a tale with a twist take centre stage in Tiny Tim, part of The Royal Lyceum Theatre’s Christmas Tales series.

Tiny Tim tells the story of the character from the well-known tale, A Christmas Carol. But in this version “the year is twenty twenty something” and Tim, who is now a single dad to two children, is attempting to keep Christmas alive but due to current circumstances is finding this difficult. What follows is a humorous and moving tale of hope and how it's ok to ask for help when needed.

I found the piece to be incredibly funny – for example when Tim is invited by the ghosts of past, present and future in one go as “they don't have time” to visit separately. I also thought such references to the original tale made me, as the audience member, connect to the story more and become more invested in this continuation of Tiny Tim's life.

Tiny Tim is performed by Garry Robson and written by Robert Softley Gale. Both artists bring a new take on a well-loved classic that can be enjoyed by everyone.

“The story goes on…

…and indeed, it gets better.  New experiences offer new opportunities – as a company LHTC has been learning to adapt for over 35 years and it will continue to do so. In recent weeks and months, it has been an unbridled joy coming back together as a company, albeit virtually for now. LHTC's performers have resumed their regular Tuesday sessions, working with some of the most talented and creative practitioners out there. We are progressing our work around script and skills development and focussing on wellbeing too. Zoom has become home for a while, and for those of our team who find Zoom a bit of challenge we are keeping in touch and connecting in other ways.”

Our rehearsals for Castle Lennox came to an abrupt halt in early March 2020 and the company fell silent for a while. It fast became apparent that we would not be in the room together any time soon, so LHTC embarked upon a period of reflection as we assessed how we could best work with our performers in an online world. We maintained telephone contact and it soon became very clear that the performers simply missed their creative sessions, their friends and the Lung Ha family, so we embarked upon a plan to engage with the performers over zoom.

Voice, movement and acting for camera 

These weekly sessions are delivered by a range of creative practitioners. They have gone from strength to strength as the weeks go on. The energy and enthusiasm in the zoom room is palpable!


Mentoring sessions for performers to develop their writing and directing skills and the first output from this was Gavin Yule’s play, The Bus Stop which featured on the Traverse Theatre website and has provided a new platform to show the Company’s work.

1:1 sessions with artist Kirsty Biff Nicolson. These sessions are bespoke and an opportunity for performers to expand on their current home practice.

“The thought of moving from live rehearsals…

…to working on the screen was a daunting one in the spring of 2020. Seven months later, it is not the same as working in a rehearsal space but is an inspiring challenge to learn and explore what we can do together using the camera online. Nothing can replace live theatre and I knew quite early on that I didn’t want to transfer the live experience of working together on to the screen. However, as a strong and resilient ensemble, we have found ways of working with the screen to our advantage and are developing skills and experiences that will all contribute to our future work in the rehearsal room. This is a new exciting journey that evolves, surprises and sometimes challenges us. Online working will not replace the live interaction once we get back to the rehearsal room, but I’m sure it will continue to work alongside our work in the future. We are looking forward to the adventures that 2021 will bring.”

We plan to continue with our zoom sessions for as long we need to before we can get back into a rehearsal room together. We are aiming towards our next production being performed in autumn 2021. Development weeks will hopefully start in early 2021 and as ever, we will be responsive to the current circumstances and adapt our process as required.
