Looking Back on a Marvellous May for Lung Ha Theatre Company

As May draws to a close, we’re reflecting on a busy yet exciting month for Lung Ha Theatre Company which has seen our 40th anniversary year get off to a flying start!

We kicked off the month with a very special appearance at the Europe in Action 2024 Conference, hosted by Enable and Inclusion Europe at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow during Learning Disability Awareness Week. This 3-day conference saw participants from all over Europe and beyond come together to discuss important issues related to learning disability rights, and to share experiences and ideas to advance inclusion.

Lung Ha Theatre Company was invited to host the closing plenary session of the conference on the theme of deinstitutionalisation, including a presentation about the Company’s work and a focus on our award-winning production Castle Lennox from 2023. The session saw members of the cast and creative team discuss the making of Castle Lennox, as well as sharing video extracts from the original production and a live performance of two songs from the show!

Our amazing team on the ground included:

Fiona Mackinnon Associate Director on Castle Lennox

Linda McLean Playwright and Lyricist for Castle Lennox

Becky Leach Lung Ha Support Team Co-ordinator

Emma Clark, Lewis Drummond, Nicola Tuxworth and Gavin Yule Lung Ha Ensemble members and Castle Lennox cast

Kevin Lennon Castle Lennox cast

Lung Ha also featured as part of the coverage of the event by STV News, which you can watch or revisit below:

The audience feedback on the day was so incredibly positive, and we would like to thank Enable and Inclusion Europe for inviting us to be a part of such an important and inspiring event!

Later in the month, we held a small celebration for friends and family at the Traverse Theatre where we screened our new short film, Love Like Salt, a loose adaptation of Shakespeare’s King Lear featuring members of the Lung Ha Ensemble and co-created by Maria Oller, Susan Worsfold and Stuart Platt.

We also screened a short excerpt from a documentary film by Ensemble actor Emma McCaffrey, who used footage from Lung Ha Theatre Company’s previous shows – some of them very old, including our first production Lung Ha’s Monkey! – and filmed interviews with actors and creatives.

The event was a spectacular red carpet affair, and included heartwarming and inspiring speeches by Artistic Director Maria Oller, Executive Director Ruth McEwan and Chair of the Board Sabriena Clayton.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to the Traverse Theatre for hosting us, as well as to everyone who attended on the night and everyone who has supported us over the years. We could not have done it without you.

Both of these wonderful events were truly a testament to Lung Ha’s rich history and exciting future. And with preparations well underway for our Fringe production An Unexpected Hiccup at Zoo Southside, 2-10 August @ 4.30pm – not to mention the official launch of our Spotlight On… series – our 40th anniversary celebrations are only just beginning!
